Kihoku is the gate town to Kumanokodo, which was designated as a World Heritage site in 2004. Kihoku town is blessed with various aquatic resources. There are good fishing points along its rugged coastline for bonito, tuna and yellowtail. In some bays, there is commercial fish farming for red sea bream, flatfish and yellowtail, etc. The commercial oyster produced in Kihoku (Watarikaki) is well known for its juicy taste. This is as a result of its production in the nutrient-rich water of the local Funatsu River and Sea of Kumano.
Historically Kihoku seafood has always enjoyed a good reputation for its freshness and its food processing industry wide respect for its innovative technology. In the Edo period, a dried bonito produced in Kihoku was ranked in the “Japan dried bonito ranking list” issued at the end of the Edo period.
The trade and commercial business has developed side by side with the primary and secondary industry. In the service sector, local guesthouses serve original dishes using local food from the mountains and ocean to attract visitors.
We appreciate and hope to effectively use such resources as a foundation for local industry.
